Industry 4.0

About the IHK summer tour: "Lübeck-based companies are right at the forefront".

LÜBECK. Industry 4.0 and digitization in manufacturing

Visit of Lars Schöning, Managing Director of the Chamber of Industry and Commerce in Lübeck, and Dr. Thilo Rohlfs, State Secretary in the Ministry of Economics, Transport, Labour, Technology and Tourism of the State of Schleswig-Holstein.

Mankenberg GmbH has also made its way into the digital age. The manufacturer of industrial valves and special valves has been on the market since 1885. "Up to now, we have been producing by hand, but digitization has made process control easier," said Managing Director Dr. Stefan Nehlsen. Meanwhile, the company records every step via barcode and can inform the customer in real time what stage his product is at and when it is ready.

For Mankenberg, digitization offers further advantages. The company is represented in almost 50 countries, but many customers would no longer visit the trade fairs. "How should we get in touch with our customers? The best way to market our products is digitally, we create networks in social media platforms and provide information about our products," says Nehlsen. He estimates that 60 percent of the sales process can be handled digitally. "The knowledge of the needs of our customers and a good dialogue with them is a guarantor of our success. We can also improve and accelerate the service process thanks to digitization."

Schöning drew a positive balance of the visits: "Lübeck-based companies are among the leaders. They are technology leaders in their industry and invest in improving their products and processes to achieve even more precise results for customers". The purpose of the visits to the managing directors and board members is to find out where companies are suffering and how the Chamber of Industry and Commerce, politics and administration can provide even better support to the economy. State Secretary Rohlfs also stressed: "It is important to me to always maintain close contact with our companies.
